Today at Berlin Messe, Huawei announced a ‘lite’ version of their upcoming Mate 20. Focusing on four key areas that they feel young adult consumers value most, Mate 20 Lite offers a sleek design, AI-led camera & user experience and excellent price/performance ratio.

A Looker for £359/€429

Huawei wanted to bring the premium look of their flagships to the Mate 20 Lite. The handset features an all-glass front and rear with an aluminium band tying the whole thing together. The ‘gradient’ colour scheme will make its way to the Lite so you can hunt down the purple iridescent one when it launches next Wednesday, 5th September (UK, Carphone Warehouse). Huawei Mate 20 Lite releases in Ireland in October.

Camerae Optimae

There are four cameras on the Mate 20 Lite, two main and two selfie. Both front and rear arrangements come with a depth lens for impressive focus and bokeh effects. The handset will also feature the AI finery of the Mate 20 and P20 Pro -the AI can determine what a user is shooting and adjust its settings.

Images can be searched by image time and name or by content. That’s right, your mid-range Huawei Mate 20 Lite can identify objects in previous snaps so a user can search for cars or guitars and the AI should be able to select appropriate images.

Mate 20 Lite can use Amazon to check product info or purchase whatever the camera is pointing at.

Some other neat tricks brought down from on high include 3D lighting, post-shot refocus and smile recognition (pre-shot).

Budget Gamer

For under €430/£360, you probably aren’t expecting PUBG Mobile to run like a champ. But Huawei are hoping to provide the best gaming experience in the cut-throat mid-market. Mate 20 Lite bests its predecessor with 60% greater CPU performance with 30% less power consumption.

Mate 20 Lite

Since Huawei built most of the 4G networks, they have a good handle on mobile data throughput. Mate 20 Lite promises seamless 4G-to-WiFi-to-4G switching so your games won’t eject you from a server due to the momentary loss of connection. This feature is used in all applications but will be very useful in gaming.
